Local reports from the arrests reported yesterday

Yesterday reports all over the country detailed a national FBI sting operation allegedly targeting pimps who force youth into prostitution. However it’s clear from the numbers that the majority of arrests (at least 290) were of adult women alleged to have offered sex for money - adult women who could be 18 years old, 17 [...]

AP reports “345 arrested, kids rescued in prostitution busts” in five day arrest binge

“345 arrested, kids rescued in prostitution busts,” that’s the headline from the Associated Press this evening. But when you read the article it turns out even though it’s framed as
Hundreds of people have been arrested and 21 children rescued in what the FBI is calling a five-day roundup of networks of pimps who force [...]

News and another youth made video

Once again I’ve found a number of arrests, court cases and convictions having to do with teens in the sex trade this week.
In Texas police called out Craigslist again for being used to advertise “erotic services” of minors (in addition to adults) and arrested an adult man and woman and 16 year old girl.
In California [...]

tagging kids like bears

I had to read the article a few times before I could believe it. Apparently in Scotland they are electronically tagging some youth who are believed to be at high risk of sexual exploitation in the sex trade.
Ok, let’s break down what’s wrong with this picture. Tagging people like they were lost penguins or whales [...]

news updates for May 16th

I’m off to Portland, Oregon and Chicago to present on youth in the sex trade, harm reduction case management and street law for harm reduction folks.
This week the New York Times has a video report on Carmen’s Place - a shelter for transgendered street youth. Again I get nervous when I see youth open [...]

Weekly news round-up

Weekly updates on news articles of note:
An Arizona State University news article talks about the invisibility of homeless youth and explains a little of the culture and communities of homeless youth. I always appreciate it when media reports try to explore some of the complexities of a situation. Just like for youth in the sex [...]

weekly news links

First the encouraging news, that Joe Francis, creator of Girls Gone Wild, is facing serious, on-going legal trouble resulting in an arrest and another court appearance on tax evasion charges.
Also a report on the Ruth Ellis Center for LGBTQ youth in Michigan doing amazing community building work and concrete services.
In case you missed it from [...]

more news items for the week

As if to prove my point from this post, police from a suburb of Chicago arrested a 17 year old (with an adult male and an adult woman) and charged her with running an escort service using Craigslist.
Although just a year ago she had been arrested at 16 with her mother for prostitution (that case [...]

Youth-led demonstration and more news updates

The picture is from one of the news items of note this week. Here in Wisconsin, youth organized to protest a rule banning unaccompanied teens from a mall just inside of a suburb next to Milwaukee.
I want to point out that although I’m posting five news items that caught my eye in the week; I [...]
