For this week’s news links…
If you remember almost a couple of weeks ago I posted about an amazing new booklet on police brutality against women of color and trans people of color here. To follow up on that check out the Nov/Dec issue of ColorLines. A series of articles detail an investigation into fatal police shootings, with African Americans and Latinos overrepresented consistently.
Here in Wisconsin a new report on the status of girls 10-19 in the state showed many findings, including the fact that “42 percent of girls 15 or younger reported their first sexual contact was not consensual.”
Check out a great project in Montreal boldly putting real sexual health education back in high schools, taught by youth.
November is National Runaway Prevention Month - this article talks about one communities’ efforts in Monterey County, California to bring awareness. The tagline to the article makes me shake my head - “show concern for stray teens” like they’re lost puppies or something. But alright, they’re trying.
Lastly, Regina is trying out a harm reduction effort with drop boxes located in the community to collect used needles or “dirties” as we often call them. It’s a great way to keep everyone safer and make it easy for folks who need a place to safely dispose of syringes (remember one shot- one sterile syringe is best)
